Windows 7

Well, I finally got around to upgrading from Windows Vista to Windows 7.   The machine is a ThinkCentre desktop model M57p, dual core, about 3 gigs of RAM running 32 bit Vista and serving mostly as a media extender to an Xbox360.

Just for fun I tried to an upgrade and that took about 8+ hours.   Surprisingly, everything more or less worked with a few qlitches here and there.   The system still had a lot of junk loaded and sofware in various states of disrepair as usually happens on a Windows machine.   The boot up time has been painfully slow, etc.

So, I figured, what the heck, and got another SATA drive, so I could have the old drive as is, and went with a fresh install of Windows 7 64 bit.

This took about an hour and again, surprisingly, everything "just worked".   Response time is much improved and the GUI is much improved.   Of course, it took me a while to get my head around "libraries" and getting my network attached storage to behave, but all in all, a worthwhile endeavor.
